The Fair 04:08
The night I dropped acid and went to the fair I spent 36 dollars throwing darts through the air For a Motley Crue mirror that would soon need repair And I laid there knowing I'd never leave there The night I dropped acid and went to the fair Elizabeth called me and said she’d be there By the time she arrived I was too gone to care Was a 50-foot drop down that 20-yard stare And I’m a long way from home 30 miles I’d bet And I lost a friend but gained a night of Funnel cakes and sweat The night I dropped acid and went to the fair I stole me a rabbit and fell down some stairs The corn dogs they tasted like candy I swear And I ran in circles til circles turned square And I’m a long way from home Nine miles I’d bet And I lost a friend but gained a night of Cigarettes and spit And I’m a long way from home Five miles I’d bet And I lost a friend but gained a night of Licorice and fits The night I dropped acid and went to the fair I unstrapped myself on a tilt a whirl dare And my eyes found the sky as I took to the air Never felt so alive never felt so scared And I’m a long way from home Half a mile I’d bet And I lost a friend but gained a night a week's pay well spent The night I dropped acid and went to the fair I went looking for God but he cut off his hair No one could see me cause no one was there The night I dropped acid and went to the fair

Sycamore 03:24
The sun's going down on Sycamore In a house I once called a home where the walls just stare and hold sweltering air till the night time brings me cold Been a year, maybe two, it don't matter now But I go and I see you awhile Down the road a spell, where the June bugs swell And the grass grows tall and wild Life ain't no mystery You come and you go, you love and you leave When the sun goes down on Sycamore I'll be halfway through that door There's a hole in the wall where I hid some things There's a picture of us in '85 I'm wearing a suit that's navy blue And you're wearing that same old smile It's a long way down this driveway I feel the gravel between my toes I could turn and look behind me But I've got too many miles to go
3.
There's a dead mockingbird in the backyard, flew into my window today Do you ever feel like your whole life is slipping away I'm running low on Lone Star, I've been drinking all day Guess I'll hang around 'til I run out of reasons to stay Half the time you peel back and all you find is a bruise Half the time you wake up and put on the news There ain't no point trying to fight it, you make your own choice or you don't choose Sittin' round trying to beat these mockingbird blues I met my dad on Monday at the corner bar He said "son, is the world still breaking your heart" It appears out of nowhere, running hard, fast, and mean The good and the bad and the in-between Half the time you're knowing, half the time you knew Half the time you wake up with nothing to do There ain't no good way to fight it, it's an uphill battle you lose Sittin' round trying to beat these mockingbird blues Half the time you feel bad, half the time you lose Half the time you wake up, and look for your shoes But there ain't no point trying to fight it, you make your own choice or you don't choose But you ain't gonna beat these mockingbird blues No you ain't gonna beat these mockingbird blues

Julie 04:51
Julie wore her broken heart on the inside of her sleeve In a thousand dollar car with a stolen wedding ring And the days they blurred like lights in an out of focus frame With the words repeating in her mind "you'll never, ever change" Julie got a little place on the other side of town Changed her number and her name, and she lost her ground And the nights they flew like wings from a toppled, broken cage Soaring straight into a fire of ever-rising flames Julie, the windshield's cold And you and me have no place to go I've been driving all night in this car I'll never get where you are Inflated, the air comes out, you cannot remember to breathe Debated, it's haunted now, the ghost has returned to the scene They found her lying in a field by a vacant mobile home Her arms outstretched at her side, reaching for her phone And her children watched her sink six feet into the ground And no one ever changed, and nothing made a sound And her children watched her sink six feet into the ground And no one ever changed, and nothing made a sound

Post Oak 03:59
When the post oaks all die Gettin' squeezed by the vines Crawling high, stretching wide Never once thinking twice Now there's nothin' but light Streaming in through these blinds And the feelings inside You worked so hard to hide You can't change the wind And you can't change the time But you can change a heart And you can change a mind But you can't change a cloudy day That's all I'm trying to say Yeah the shoes get tight And the years take flight You are born, live, and die In the blink of an eye Son, you can't stay five No matter how hard you try So just fight the good fight And make the wrong things right You can't change the wind And you can't change the time But you can change a heart And you can change a mind But you can't change a cloudy day That's all I'm trying to say Yeah the sun's gonna shine and the planets align And you may be inclined To think it's somehow divine When I'm losing my sight and the dark fills the light Don't hold on tight Just hold on tight

Five Miles 03:31
Well I threw away the bible that they gave me I tossed it in the river Rio Grande Since you’ve gone away it feels like I’ve been changing So I’m changing out my locks and making plans Five more miles to Pflugerville I’m flying Five more miles and I’ll be at your side And when that dirt is thrown away and I finally see your face I’m taking you back home North Caroline Well I stopped off at the hardware store in Sandy I bought the cheapest shovel I could find I also bought some flowers and some candy You’ve got the sweetest teeth this side of mine Five more miles to Pflugerville I’m flying Five more miles and I’ll be at your side And when that dirt is thrown away and I finally see your face I’m taking you back home North Caroline Well you look a little different in that tarp dear And your smell it isn’t quite what I recall But it feels so God damn good to have you back here And by tonight we’ll be having us a ball Five more miles to Pflugerville I’m flying Five more miles and I’ll be at your side And when that dirt is thrown away and I finally see your face I’m taking you back home North Caroline It's so good to have you home in Caroline

Gary was wearing the shroud of Turin He bought it on Monday afternoon at the Methodist garage sale And he chewed em down and got it for a dollar he knows just how to get the best deal Gary was working on guard at the pharmacy He thought it was Monday afternoon so he made plans To wear the shroud to the riverboat casino He knows just how to make a big scene But you can't tell them how You build your days to fit the frame of the dream you had that never came true
8.
We sank into the river's flow and held on with all our might Caught in the undertow like disappearing light Light I stumbled into this with legs unfit to stand A swing and then a miss, come searching for my hand Big Green Eyes Big Green Eyes Big Green Eyes There were so many days where morning turned to night And all that I could say was "it's gonna be alright." We never let it show, and it killed us trying to hide But only the river knows where the water will divide
9.
They were molded into form and scattered cross the floor for miles In ranks of one through 94 in plastic uniforms they'd fight And we would gather in our haze and put them into place for battle Commander bulletproof and brave Surrounded in some cave with no escape And you believed it could be real if we just closed our eyes and tried to make them come to life And minutes spent would pass in days and all our bones would shake and rattle Until the walls came crumbling down They wouldn't make a sound, just shadows The battlefield will sleep till dawn but we will soldier on in our dreams and stumble on some secret door imaginary wars, we will fight
10.
It was night and the summer was ending You were singing that same Townes song And if I needed you, well I did, it's true So we danced like nothing could move It spun around so careless and new You arrived as a dove in winter Flying fast, your feathers on You and me down a road, just a hanging on I didn't know then what I would do I hit the ground when I found you Held on to Held on through Held on felled on My eyes just staring at my shoes Whiskey and afternoon blues It was day and the bourbon was sending I was singing a Guy Clark song Like a coat from the cold, we were silver and gold I didn't know then what I'd fell into I lost me about to lose you It was night and the movie was ending It was summer and winter and fall In the front of your car, just a waitin' on The words I wouldn't say to you Both our hearts just a breakin' in two Held on to Held on through Held on felled on It was the holding that I couldn't do Gone away, same as you Held on to Held on through Held on felled on My eyes just staring at my shoes Whiskey and afternoon blues

about

Van Dyke Brown Arlington, Texas

Scott Honea formed Van Dyke Brown in 2019 when he wrote, performed, recorded, and released his debut album "Holy Libel." It quickly found a home on Dallas radio (KXT/91.7), and Fort Worth Weekly called it "dreamy folk pop." Full band shows followed in late 2019 before the world shut down. In 2022, Honea finished the group's sophomore album, which will be released before the end of the year. ... more
